A young boy decided to visit a shelter and chose to adopt the oldest dog there, a 14-year-old miniature poodle named Shey. Shey had been abandoned at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in November 2017 because his family was moving and couldn’t take him along.
Shey spent four months at the shelter, patiently waiting for someone to take him home. Dealing with dental problems and having never been neutered, the rescue organization arranged for his surgery and medical care. Surprisingly, only one of his teeth was salvageable, but despite being deaf, partially blind, and toothless, Shey wasn’t exactly a top pick for potential adopters. However, everything changed when a young boy named Tristan and his mother visited the shelter one night last week. They were looking for a small dog who loved to cuddle, and the staff thought Shey would be a perfect match for them.
According to Jessica Jorgenson, the rescue’s digital content coordinator, Shey is incredibly affectionate and enjoys being in the company of people.
Tristan eagerly took a seat, excited to meet his potential new furry friend. The grin on Tristan’s face was pure happiness as Shey was gently placed in his arms by the staff. “Right from the start, Shey seemed comfortable with Tristan,” Jorgenson commented. Tristan listened intently as the adoption team discussed Shey’s unique requirements, showing his eagerness to provide the best care for the lovable little dog nestled in his lap. Realizing that Shey had some hearing and vision impairments, Tristan moved with caution, being mindful of what Shey could handle. He showed great care and consideration for Shey’s needs during their first meeting.
Tristan took out his phone to organize future vet appointments for Shey and carefully reviewed his medical records. He made sure to inform the staff about the special spot he had set up in his room for Shey. Jorgenson mentioned that Tristan showed great sensitivity towards Shey’s needs and was impressed by his maturity and inquisitiveness.

It was an easy decision to bring a dog into the family, especially with how eager the young boy was for a furry companion. Plus, the fact that he was so mature and responsible about choosing to adopt a senior dog was a wonderful surprise. Now that Shey has found his forever home, he seems to have found his favorite spot too – nestled in Tristan’s loving arms. Despite having to wait for months to find a loving family after being abandoned, Tristan is determined to make up for lost time by showering Shey with all the love and care he deserves.
